Boat Trip and Meeting, Sept. 25, 2004

The recent boat trip was a great success. we had about 30 members and guests aboard to recreat Capt. Clark's sojourn up the Columbia to investigate the Yakima River. The journals were out, the maps were out, and the voices were sometimes raised as we battled back and forth about whether Clark really made it all the way to the mouth of the Tapteal, or TapeTete River. Using his maps we identified the islands he talked about where there were Indian villages. Along the way we passed the spot where the Kennewick Man was found.

I will not say agreement was reached on all points, but we all learned a little more about the expedition. The real value of these trips is getting us further into the journals, and often we learn something unrelated to the present subject. For instance I keep hearing that the Plains Indians told the corps about the short cut between G.F. and Traveler's Rest, but could never find it. But on Saturday, while reading about this segment of the trip, I was led to Sept. 10, 1805, where Lewis wrote:The Minetares informed us that there mass [was] a large river west of, and at no great distance from the sources of Medecine river, which passed along the Rocky Mountains from S. to N.—

After the boat ride, we made a couple of stops to see prickly pear cactus, and to this neat tule mat lodge made by local high school students.

A potluck followed the trip, with Gary's wonderful posole and a great array of other dishes. At the dinner there were four men in uniform: Meriwether Lewis (Glen Allison), Sgt. Gass (Gary Lentz), Private Shields (Tom Laidlaw), and Private Whitehouse (John Orthman) in his hunting clothes.

On Sunday, Gary showed paper models of the proposed iron silhouttes, which will be placed at the May 2, 1806 campsite on Patit Creek.. This should be a wonderful display. Here's the group discussing possible arrangements of the figures. You've already seen the people so I made this picture larger to give the figures better size.

With so many events happening all over the country and our state, it is hard to keep up with a comprehensive list. I need people to communicate with me. If you learn of an event that is not listed, e-mail me the link and I will publish it. If you are with another organization that sends out notices, put me on your e-mail list, as well as the president. Most of the events have websites so I don't want to try to duplicate too much stuff. Please consult the links box below to find almost anything. If you can't find it there and you find it elsewhere, send me the link, and I will include it in the links box.

 President's Message

President’s Message, Sept. 10, 2004
“One always has time enough, if one will apply it well.” -
Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Our chapter was well represented at the annual LCTHF meeting held this year in Bismarck.  At the awards banquet George Eisentrout and the chapter received recognition for contributing to the advancement of the L&C story.  The woodcarver’s exhibit is being displayed at libraries and museums throughout the state and has received excellent reviews.  The display provides a venue for schools to experience the expedition’s contribution to American science of many species of flora and fauna.  Also lectures that promote the commemoration of the bicentennial are being scheduled at the institutes that display the exhibit.  The display will be presented at the annual meeting in Portland in 2005.  The display has become a very special informative tool to generate interest and support our mission statement.

I would like to thank all the participants that contributed to the silent auction that was held at the annual meeting.  Our chapter had some great items that were highly sought after in the bidding.  Rennie and Barb Kubik organized a great event that generated over $4000 for construction of display cases for Martin Plomondon’s maps at the foundation’s library at Great Falls, MT.  Also thank you to our members that contributed to the project by purchasing many items that were donated to the silent auction.  I’m sure this will become a regular feature of future annual foundation meetings.

Our education committee has started to lay the foundation stones for construction of a project that will benefit our efforts to stimulate appreciation of the L&C experience.  Bob Guard attended several meetings at Bismarck related to this subject.  His contribution will be helpful in establishing a meaningful project for the education committee.  Ruth Norwood, education committee chair, has been instrumental in getting an education project started for our chapter.  This will become the main focus for our future efforts to promote the L&C story.

Our chapter met with the Oregon chapter to discuss the plans for the next annual meeting in Portland – both chapters are hosting the meeting.  Comments and questions were fielded pertaining to our involvement in the meeting and it was agreed that we need to get down to specifics and make definite arrangements for the meeting.  Gary Lentz reminded me that we have less than a year to get organized!!  Between now and next summer many planning sessions will be scheduled – will keep you posted.  As the national event rapidly approaches there will be many requests for your involvement.  Many members have stepped forward and have volunteered their time and expertise.  I’m looking forward to this event and a good presentation of Pacific Northwest hospitality.

There will be many L&C events to attend in the next year as the bicentennial commemoration approaches the West.  Many of our members have become involved in the events and tours that have and are being scheduled.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you that have been so dedicated to representing our contribution to America’s history.

Our next chapter event will be a boat tour on the Columbia-Snake rivers and a potluck/ campout at the Lewis & Clark Trail State Park.  Gary Lentz has organized a sensational event and I hope to see many of you for a full day and evening of information on the Corps of Discovery.  See you on The Trail!
